Matadors Balanced Attack Nets Win in Opener

YUMA, Ariz--- First match jitters gave way to a deep, talented offensive display as the Arizona Western Matadors (1-0 overall) knocked off the Southern Nevada Coyotes (0-2 overall) 25-23, 23-25, 25-19, and 25-17 to start the new season with a win Friday night at The House in the first ever AWC Volleyball Invitational.
The first two sets were dead even and mirror images of themselves with Tylor Iosua’s service run when the match was tied at 17 providing the needed separation for a four-point run, leading to a CSN timeout at 21-17. But the Matadors took four set points before Connie Silva finished the set with a kill right now the middle.
The Matadors fell behind in set two, taking a timeout down 10-14 but traded points before finally pulling even at 22. Anny Montaño put the Matadors ahead after a CSN timeout, but the Coyotes rallied four three straight points behind Natasha Obradavic to take the set 25-23.
Arizona Western was down again in set three, dropping the first three points, but Montaño’s serve launched the Matadors in front for seven straight points and they would never relinquish the lead. CSN would trim the difference to two at 20-18, but Patrycja Rykala and Pamela Durazo delivered consecutive kills before Daniela Jimenez finished off the set.
That would be the confidence boost the Matadors needed as Jerica Vele started set four on a 3-0 run at the service line. But CSN fought back again, tallying four straight points to take the lead at 10-9 before the Matadors answered behind Vele again, including her second ace of the set.
From there Montaño, Silva and Durazo all contributed key kills to widen the advantage. But it was Alessandra Arellano’s service run that put the match out of reach, capped off by Durazo and Iosua’s key kills.
The Mats got it to 24-13 but it took five match points before Jimenez put the game away.
Montaño led the Matadors with 10 kills and four aces, even contributing 10 digs. Silva added 8 kills with Jimenez contributing 7.
Arellano played a key role in the back row with 14 digs and 3 aces. Vele added 3 aces and 16 assists.
Arizona Western will be back at it in primetime of Day 2 at the AWC Volleyball Invitational, hosting Lee College at 7:00pm. Concluding a full day of volleyball at AWC that will begin at 9:00 am on Friday morning.
Admission is just $5 and $3 for those with military or senior identification.
