Learning Season

YUMA, AZ – In junior college athletics, freshman student-athletes have to learn and adapt quickly as they navigate a new place, new coach and new teammates. For the Arizona Western College volleyball team, freshman setter Stephany Orjuela did so successfully and improved throughout the season. She was named as an Honorable Mention for the All Arizona Community College Athletic Conference teams.

The 5’10 freshman from Cali, Colombia worked throughout the season to keep the Lady Matador offense running smoothly. She finished first in the conference in assists per set (10.19).

She set her personal best with 56 assists and 19 digs in a five set loss against Eastern Arizona College on October ninth. On defense, she piled up at least 10 digs nine times throughout the season.

As a team, the Lady Matadors finished second in the conference in kills per set (12.25). Orjuela helped teammate Paola Figueroa finish sixth in the conference in kills per set (2.88).

The Lady Matadors finished the season 12-12 overall and 5-11 in the ACCAC.
