YUMA, Ariz. – When the Arizona Western volleyball team needed a kill last week, Mafe Sandoval delivered. The sophomore hammered home 38 kills as the Lady Mats went 2-0, and she was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Division I Player of the Week.
Sandoval, an NJCAA All-American last season, finished with 19 kills and an efficient .298 hitting percentage in a five set win at South Mountain last Wednesday. She also played a major role on defense with 23 digs.
Last Friday, Sandoval was even stronger in a four-set win over Phoenix. She picked up 19 kills again and had an incredible .459 hitting percentage. When she was on defense, she picked up 15 digs.
For the season, Sandoval is fifth in the conference with 3.22 kills per set, and she has 119 kills in 14 matches. She is also second on the team with 3.27 digs per set.
She is the second Lady Matador to be named the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week this season. Yolaine Mosquera Lopez earned the weekly honor on September 18.
The Lady Mats are on the road on Wednesday night at Eastern Arizona College. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Thatcher, Ariz.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
