SALT LAKE CITY, Utah---A pair of error filled matches marred the start to the Salt Lake City trip as the Arizona Western Matadors (2-3 overall) fell in straight sets to Western Nebraska and in four sets to Central Wyoming Saturday at the Crystal INNvitational.
The Matadors struggled to find consistency from the get-go, as Western Nebraska took an early four point lead in the first set and forced an AWC timeout at 12-8. The Mats couldn't whittle down the lead at all and burned another timeout at 18-14.
But the second timeout seemed to create some rhythm behind Pamela Durazo and the Matadors cut the deficit to one at 22-1. But a string of errors let the match slip right into set point and Western Nebraska took the first set 25-21
The Matadors fell down a little quicker in set two, with Durazo putting an end to a 9-4 start for Western Nebraska. But the Matadors would lose the next five points before Durazo punished an overpass to stop the run.
That would only be momentarily though, as Western Nebraska closed out the set 25-13.
Arizona Western started faster in the third set and took a 4-2 lead before WNC steamed ahead 8-4. The Matadors came back to tie at 9 and traded points until 17 before Western Nebraska pulled away for the match, closing it out 25-21.
The Matadors hit just .125 for the match and committed 14 errors on 104 attempts.
In the second match, a few hours of rest, had the Matadors trading points with Central Wyoming. Middles Kaylani Reis and Connie Silva each had 8 kills but AWC fell in four sets.
The Matadors will conclude the trip with two matches on Saturday. Opening up against Southern Idaho at 8:00am (PT)/9:00am (MT) in a game that will be streamed on scenicwest.com/slcc.
They conclude the trip at 12:00pm (PT)/1:00pm (MT) against Casper (WY). That game will not be streamed.
