Lady Matadors lose in five to #3 Snow

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors (2-1) lost their opening match of the Dalton Overstreet Invitational, losing 3-2 to the No. 3 ranked Snow Badgers (4-0) on Friday morning.
Snow jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first set before a Daniela Jimenez kill stopped the Badgers' early run. After the Badgers opened up an 8-5 advantage, Natalia Slazynska would halt another run with a kill as the Lady matadors put together back-to-back points to crawl within a point at 8-7.
The Lady Matadors would fight their way back to tie the set at 13, forcing a Snow timeout before the Arizona Western took the lead at 16-13 following four consecutive points. After trading points, Amanda Juliao put the Lady Matadors back in front at 21-20 with a kill. After a long back-and-forth, Jimenez gave the Lady Matadors a 31-29 first-set win with an ace.
Snow raced out to a 10-3 lead in the second set forcing the Lady Matadors to take an early timeout. After falling behind 12-5, the Lady Matadors would rally off back-to-back points to cut the deficit to 12-7. Makayala Fonoimoana would make it a three-point game at 17-14 with a kill before she would later bring the Lady Matadors to within a point at 19-18 with another kill. Snow would go on to score six of the final seven points to win the second set 25-19.
Arizona Western jumped out to an early lead in the second set, taking a 7-4 lead after a Snow block went out. After falling behind 12-9, Arizona Western would rattle off back-to-back points to cut the gap to a point at 12-11. Snow would pull away as the Lady Matadors dropped the third set 25-16.
The Lady Matadors would have to climb out of a hole in the fourth set to stay alive. After falling behind 17-12, AWC would rally, cutting the deficit to 20-18 on a Jimenez kill before an Erdmann ace made it a 20-19 game. Rori Martinez would tie the game at 20 with a block. The Lady Matadors would force a fifth set as Jimenez gave the Lady Matadors a 25-22 win in the fourth set with an ace.
Snow opened an early lead in the fifth but the Lady Matadors would grab a 5-4 lead thanks to Fonoimoana kill. That would be the only lead the Lady Matadors had in the fifth set as they would fall 15-9, losing the match 3-2.
Jimenez led the team in kills with 12 while both Juliao and Fonoimoana each had 11.
The Lady Matadors are back in action this afternoon as they take on Lee College at 1:00 pm in their second game of the Dalton Overstreet Invitational at Walraven Gymnasium on the campus of Yavapai College.
