Lady Matadors bumped on the road, swept by Eastern Arizona

THATCHER, Ariz. - It wasn't the road trip the Arizona Western Volleyball team was hoping for when they traveled east to face ACCAC leader Eastern Arizona in Thatcher this past Friday and Saturday. The Lady Matadors trailed the Gila Monsters by one game entering the two-game series. The hope was to gain a road sweep or even a series split. Arizona Western left trailing by three games in the standings. The #16 ranked Gila Monsters swept Arizona Western in straight sets on Friday night, then defeated the Lady Matadors in four sets (25-21, 25-14, 24-26, 25-13) on Saturday afternoon at Guitteau Gym. The win extended the Gila Monster's win streak to 10 in a row, improved their overall record to 16-6 and kept their ACCAC record unblemished at 8-0. Arizona Western drops to 10-5 on the season and 4-3 in conference play. The Lady Matadors still hold the second spot in the conference standings with a crucial homestand coming up against Central Arizona on Friday and Saturday. Central Arizona trails Arizona Western by one game in the standings. Friday's game against the Vaqueros starts at 7:00 p.m. in "The House" and is also "Western" night themed.
