Lady Matador's Valeria Valverde gets the call to play for U-20 National Team

YUMA, Ariz. - Arizona Western women's soccer player Valeria Valverde was recently called to the Costa Rican U-20 National Team.

"We're excited for her, it's another opportunity for her," Arizona Western women's soccer head coach Victor Verdugo said. "Anytime your national team calls you, it's something to be very proud of. I feel it's the highest honor any athlete could ever aspire to, to represent your national team."

Valverde will begin training with the national team this month, starting on December 8th and lasting through the 20th.

"For us it shows we're looking at the right players," Verdugo said. "She'll be the second player currently playing for their national team."

Sophomore Fernanda Quiroz is currently a member of the U-20 National team for Mexico.

"If you look down our roster there are five or six other players that have U-17 National team experience," Verdugo said. "Fernanda is still in the team pool and next year is the U-20 World Cup and she should get an opportunity to compete for a roster spot. Again, just very proud and happy for them and it shows we're looking in the right direction for talent.
