Lady Matadors dominate behind Kasano's four goals, end regular season perfect

YUMA, Ariz. - Freshman Reina Kasano scored four goals on Friday night leading the #2 ranked Arizona Western women's soccer team to a commanding 8-0 win over ACCAC rival Mohave College on Friday Night. The way the Lady Matadors won was a totally different version as to what happened between the two teams just three days prior. On Tuesday, Arizona Western trailed 1-0 before coming back to win 2-1 on the road at Mohave College. In the regular season and home finale on Friday night, it was a much different story and outcome. The sophomore connection of Reika Yuba and Momo Chogyogi combined for the first goal of the game at the six-minute mark. It was Yuba's third goal of the season and her second in the past three games. In the 35th minute, Reina Kasano found the back of the net to extend Arizona's Western to 2-0. Moments later, in the 39th minute, another sophomore connection put the Lady Matadors up 3-0 with captain Kei Yoneda notching her second goal of the season with help from Fernanda Quiroz. Reina Kasano then scored the next three goals as Arizona Western dominated 8-0 in a game that ended early due to the mercy rule.

"It's always good to come back home," Arizona Western Head Coach Victor Verdugo said. "This is one of the things that we work for. To be able to play at home and you can tell just how much more energy and how much more confidence. It's always difficult to play away but here at home, it's difficult to get anything from else."

The win gave Arizona Western yet another perfect regular season, the Lady Matadors finish with 13 wins, no losses and no ties. It also marked the fourth consecutive year the Lady Matadors were undefeated at home. The last time Arizona Western lost at home was September 2nd, 2021.

"A great day from a group, my sophomore class that has never dropped a point here," Verdugo said. "I'm proud of them and the future is very bright and with freshmen like Reina stepping up, as we go into playoffs, it gives us a lot of confidence going forward."

As for Reina Kasano, it marked the second time this season she scored four goals in a game. The first came this past August against Imperial Valley College. The performance also saw the freshman leapfrog fellow freshman Kanon Ozaki for the team lead in goals and total points.

Arizona Western will host Mohave College on Wednesday, October 29th, in the Region I semi-finals. It'll be the third straight time the teams will face each other.

"We're expected to go into the region and come out of our region," Verdugo said. "We'll look at Wednesday as a 90-minute game and again, show up, play with confidence and get our result so we can move forward."

Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Matador Field.
