Ono nets game winner late, Lady Matadors stay undefeated

YUMA, Ariz. - Linka Ono scored the game winning goal with under four minutes remaining to lift the Arizona Western Women's soccer team to a 2-1-win Saturday evening at Matador Field.

"She's our all-American, she's our captain," Head Coach Victor Verdugo said. "Put her back into the middle and she made something happen. That's the kind of player she is and as a captain she's responsible for getting it done and it was a moment in the game where we needed someone to take responsibility, and she stepped up and got us plus three."

Arizona Western scored the game's first goal at the 15-minute mark from Momo Chogyogi assisted by Reina Kasano. Eastern Arizona tied the score than the 90 seconds later as Brynn Kelly broke past the defense and found the back of the net with the assist going to Abbi Sanford.

"Eastern is a great team, it's a matchup we look forward to, we expect to play them in close games," Verdugo said. "They have a great coach and for us it's the kind of match that we need if we have intentions to be in the national tournament."

With the win, the #2 ranked Lady Matadors improved to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in ACCAC play. They'll have a week off before traveling to Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona next Saturday, September 20th. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
