Lady Matadors dominate in conference opener
YUMA, Ariz. - The #2 ranked Arizona Western Women's Soccer team dominated Yavapai to being conference play on Tuesday night at Matador Field. The Lady Matadors got on the board in the first 90 seconds on a goal from Linka Ono, assisted by Fernanda Quiroz. Arizona Western added a second goal six and a half minutes later with Asa Yamazaki netting the first of her two goals on the evening. Ono assisted on Arizona Western's third goal of the game scored by Kiana Knudson in the 21st minute. Arizona Western took a 3-0 lead into the half and doubloed that lead in the second half with goals from Ariana Peraza assisted by Momo Chogyogi in the 57th minute followed by a goal in the 58th minute by Fernanda Quiroz with Kiana Knudson gaining the helper before Yamazaki found the net for the second time in the 75th minute, assisted by Fernanda Quiroz. A lot of players saw the pitch and the score sheet which Head Coach Victor Verdugo says is vital during conference play.
"I thought it was a solid performance where we got everyone some minutes," Verdugo said. "I think it's important for us moving forward as we focus on Saturday and try to get ready for a great matchup versus Eastern Arizona and making sure everyone is switched on for Saturday. It's important in conference play to give everybody rotations and a little bit of experience and today we were able to get ahead and give some players some different rotations and different looks. Now we start looking at Saturday."
With the win, Arizona Western improves to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in ACCAC conference play.
This Saturday features a top 20 showdown as the Lady Matadors host #14 ranked Eastern Arizona at 4:30 p.m. at Matador Field.
