Matadors garner six Region I DI Women's Soccer All-Region performers
YUMA, Ariz. – Six Arizona Western Matadors earned their places on the 2024 Region I DI Women's Soccer All-Region teams after the Matadors went undefeated in the regular season, winning both the Region I title and the West District championship.
Yui Suetsugu, who was named the Region I DI Player of the Year, was honored as the first-team selection. Suetsugu scored 20 goals in her sophomore season, including a goal in the Matadors' 2-1 win over No. 6 ranked Salt Lake in the West District Championship game. The sophomore put together a pair of four-goal games, scoring four goals in a win over Imperial Valley in the season opener before doing so again in a win at Community Christian in October.
Freshman midfielder Linka Ono was named the Region I DI All-Region First Team after scoring 10 goals and recording three assists as a freshman this fall. Ono put together a pair of two-goal games, scoring twice in a 4-0 win at Yavapai and doing so again in a 21-0 win at Community Christian. Ono had the game-winning goal in the Matadors' 3-0 win over Yavapai in the Region I semi-final.
Defender Asa Yamazaki was also a Region I DI All-Region First Team honoree, playing in 16 games and making 15 starts. The freshman scored two goals this fall and tallied four assists. Yamazaki scored a goal in the Matadors' 6-0 win over Southern Nevada and again in a 21-0 win at Community Christian.
Goalkeeper Iyan Hernandez was named to the Region I DI All-Region Second Team, leading the ACCAC in goals-against average at 0.28 and second in save percentage at .915. Hernandez had the second most shutouts in the ACCAC with eight, playing in 15 games and making 13 starts between the sticks for the Matadors.
Maria Lopez earned Region I DI All-Region Second Team honors, playing in 14 games and making seven starts as a freshman. The midfielder scored four games and assisted on two, scoring the game-winning goal in wins over Yavapai and Cochise as well as the game-winner in the Region I title game against Eastern Arizona.
Defender Kei Yoneda was tabbed a Region I DI All-Region Second Team member after appearing in 16 games, all starts, for the Matadors this fall. Yoneda anchored a backline that allowed goals in just three games this season. The freshman scored a goal in a 3-0 win at Eastern Arizona back in September.
