Three Lady Matadors teaming up with FC Tucson in the WPSL
YUMA, Ariz. – Three Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Soccer players are teaming up again this summer, playing for FC Tucson of the Women's Premier Soccer League.
Ashly Martinez returns to Tucson where she was the team's offensive MVP during the 2022 season. Martinez fueled FC Tucson to a 2-2 draw over the No. 5 ranked team in the WPSL, SC del Sol, with a pair of goals, including the game-tying goal in the 92nd minute, back on June 1.
Honorable mention NJCAA DI Women's Soccer All-American goalkeeper Tindra Biedermann joined the team at the start of the season and played a crucial role in FC Tucson's upset win over SC del Sol, coming in the second half with FC Tucson trailing 2-1 and keeping SC del Sol off the board in the final 45 minutes in her season debut.
Freshman Leigha Dobbins has been a mainstay in the starting lineup for head coach Roberto Garcia, starting the season's first four games. Dobbins played 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw with SC del Sol.
The WPSL is one of the oldest continuous amateur women's soccer leagues in the United States and is considered the second tier of women's soccer, only below the professional National Women's Soccer League. Rosters are composed of current collegiate players, the top local high school players, and former professionals.
FC Tucson joined the WPSL in 2013 and had first-place finishes in the WPSL Desert Conference in 2018, 2019, and 2021.
