Victor Barney Named Women's Basketball Asst. Coach

Yuma, AZ – The Arizona Western Matadors coaching staff has welcomed Victor Barney as the new Assistant Coach for Women’s Basketball. Barney joins Head Coach Chelsea Dewey, who was named the 2025 Women's Basketball Coaches Association Two-Year College Coach of the Year after leading the Matadors to win the ACCAC regular season conference title last season.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Arizona Western Women’s Basketball program as an Assistant Coach,” Barney said. “The team has built a culture of grit and success, with 21+ wins in each of the last two seasons, including most recently a 26-win campaign and an ACCAC regular season championship this past year. I look forward to contributing to the continued success of this high-level program and supporting the growth and development of our student-athletes.”

Originally from Chattanooga, Tenn., Barney holds a bachelor's degree in Leisure, Sport & Tourism Studies as well a master’s degree in Media and Communication, both from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). His coaching career began at MTSU, where he served three years as a team manager and three as a graduate assistant. From there, Barney spent one summer coaching for the Nike Elite Youth Champions League, leading his team to multiple championship wins at high exposure tournaments.

“We’re excited to welcome Victor to our program!” shared Head Coach Dewey. “His passion for player development and relentless high-energy approach brings a dynamic presence that will elevate our athletes.”
