Second half push comes up short as Lady Matadors fall to Lamar CC Runnin' Lopes

MIDLAND, Texas – The Arizona Western women's basketball team (3-4) dropped a 61-50 decision to Lamar Community College on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest at the Langford Chaparral Center. The Matadors battled through early foul trouble and a slow start, showing resilience in the second half but were unable to overcome Lamar's dominance in the paint.

Mable Doumbia led the Matadors with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, playing a team-high 39 minutes and providing a steady offensive presence throughout the game.

The Matadors fell behind 10-3 early in the first quarter due to turnovers and quick fouls, forcing them to play from behind as Lamar built a 14-9 lead after one. Lamar continued to attack the paint and extended the advantage to 32-23 at halftime, capitalizing on a 36-20 edge in points in the paint and a strong rebounding performance.

Arizona Western showed determination in the third quarter, outscoring Lamar 17-14 and trimming the deficit to 46-40 by the end of the period. The key moment came when Carolina Cabrita drilled one of her two three-pointers to bring the margin to just two points, but Lamar quickly responded with a run of their own to regain control. In the fourth, Kimora Jenkins hit a timely three-pointer to keep the Matadors close, but Lamar pulled away in the closing minutes to secure the win.

Kimora Jenkins added 13 points and 6 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes for Arizona Western. Tamoy Hamilton provided a boost off the bench with 11 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks. Carolina Cabrita contributed 7 points, 4 rebounds and a key defensive block.

Foul trouble was a factor, as Jessica Liena and Queren Loubaki both fouled out in the fourth quarter. The Matador bench contributed 20 points, highlighted by the efforts of Hamilton and Cabrita, while the team converted 17 of 23 free throws to remain within striking distance. Lamar was led by Amaya Williams, who finished with 36 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals.
