YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 13 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (18-3, 9-2) used an early run to beat College of Southern Nevada (15-6, 5-5) 77-57 on Wednesday night at the House Gymnasium.
Nyah Hardy led the Matadors with 22 points off the bench while both Rita Gomes and Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe recorded double-doubles, with Gomes scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds and Zonzon-Huyghe scored 15 points and hauled in 10 rebounds.
Arizona Western used a first-quarter run to grab an early lead over the Coyotes, scoring 17 straight points after trailing 4-2 in the first quarter. Rita Gomes put the Matadors up 16 points at the end of the quarter with a three-pointer before the buzzer, extending the Matadors' advantage to 25-9.
After the Coyotes trimmed the Matadors' lead to 39-20, Jordan Labrador-Hallett drilled a three-pointer out of the timeout to push the lead back over 20 points at 42-20. The Coyotes closed the half on a 9-2 run, cutting the Matadors' lead to 44-29 at the break.
Southern Nevada cut the Matadors' lead to 12 points at 48-36 before the Matadors went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 55-36 and closed the quarter with a 67-42 lead. The Matadors were held to just 10 points in the fourth quarter.
The Matadors are back on the road on Saturday, February 8, heading to Thatcher, Ariz. to take on Eastern Arizona at 2:00 pm.
