Women's Basketball rolls to 84-60 win over 12th ranked Odessa in home opener
YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 25 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (7-1) opened its home portion of the 2024-25 schedule with an 84-60 win over No. 12 ranked Odessa College (7-2) on Friday evening on the first day of the Chapman Automotive Thanksgiving Classic at the House Gymnasium.
The Matadors had five players score in double figures, led by Rita Gomes, who finished the game with 19 points and went 4-for-8 from the three-point line.
Arizona Western trailed by as many as six points in the first quarter before closing the first period on an 8-0 run to take a 17-15 lead into the second quarter. After the Wranglers opened the second quarter on a 4-0 scoring run, the Matadors were able to outscore Odessa 17-10 to take a 34-25 lead into the halftime break.
Mable Doumbia was the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 18 points, 14 of which came in the final 20 minutes. Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe scored 17 points and led the Matadors in rebounds with nine.
Arizona Western scored 29 points in the second quarter, outscoring the Wranglers 29-13 and held off Odessa in the fourth to win its third straight game, 84-60 .
Nyah Hardy chipped in with 15 points off the bench while Dyvine Harris scored 12 points and had a team-high eight assists.
The Matadors finish the weekend on Saturday, November 30, taking on Jessup University JV at 2:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
