Women's Basketball outlasts Gila Monsters 65-61 in overtime to take conference opener

The Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (5-1, 1-0) opened ACCAC play with a 65-61 overtime win over the No. 10 ranked Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (4-2, 0-1) on Wednesday evening in Thatcher, Ariz., after trailing by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter. 

Sophomore Dyvine Harris scored a season-high 18 points and had five rebounds to lead the Matadors to their second consecutive win, finishing the game as one of four in double-figures for the Matadors. 

Arizona Western scored 25 points in the first quarter, outscoring the Gila Monsters 25-14 in the first 10 minutes. However, it was held to just 16 points in the second and third quarters combined, allowing Eastern Arizona to take the lead. The Matadors did not score a point in the first seven minutes of the third quarter. 

The Matadors trailed 46-41 entering the fourth quarter and outscored Eastern Arizona 14-11, tying the game at 55-55 on a pair of Harris' free throws just before the end of regulation. Harris connected on eight of 12 free throws in the win. 

Nyah Hardy scored eight points and the first basket of overtime before hitting a three-pointer to put the Matadors up 63-58 with 37 seconds remaining. Mable Doumbia scored 11 points while Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe finished with 12. 

The Matadors return home on Saturday, November 23, when they host Community Christian in an ACCAC matchup at 2:00 p.m. at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
