The Stage: Win or Go Home
The No. 18 Lady Matadors (38-19) face the No. 17 San Jacinto Ravens (41-24) in a do-or-die elimination game this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. CT at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama. It's the first known meeting between the programs — No Games in Recent History — and it arrives with everything on the line at the 2026 NJCAA DI Softball World Series.
Stage Fright: Searching for a World Series Breakthrough
Monday's 3-0 loss to No. 15 Iowa Western marked the third straight NJCAA World Series game in which the Lady Matadors have been shut out. In 2025, Arizona Western fell to Southern Union State 4-0 in the opener and then to Grayson 8-0. The program's last World Series win came on May 14, 2014 — a 5-1 elimination-bracket victory over Spartanburg Methodist. The drought is real, and the urgency is high, but so is the opportunity: the Lady Matadors are chasing the breakthrough that changes the story.
Turning the Page After Iowa Western
Jessica Smith gave Arizona Western a chance in the opener with a gutsy complete-game effort — six strikeouts, three earned runs on six hits over six innings, and 101 pitches that kept the Lady Matadors within reach on the national stage. The bats didn't deliver enough help: AWC went 3-for-23 (.130), struck out eight times, and left five on base. Arizona Western did not get the result it wanted in the opener, but the formula for a response is clear. Smith kept the Lady Matadors close. The Arizona Western freshmen started to settle in and sophomore Analy Trejo broke through on the national stage. Now the next step is turning contact, traffic, and pressure into runs.
Shaking Off the Rust
Coach Joel Prickett did not point to the six-hour weather delay as the reason for Arizona Western's offensive struggles. He mentioned Iowa Western waited through the same conditions. Instead, Prickett pointed to the 17-day layoff after the Lady Matadors qualified early for the NJCAA DI World Series. "The delay wasn't much of a factor. Iowa Western had to wait just as long," Prickett said. "The 17 days off didn't help our bats. That was the biggest thing I was worried about. You can't be off for two weeks without real competition. You can only do so much in practice. We'll come back tomorrow and swing the bats better." Prickett also felt the Lady Matadors got too tied to each moment in the opener. "I felt like we played like every pitch was the end," Prickett said. "We were just too emotional and tied to every pitch. We just need to play loose, play loose and get after it."
