Lady Matadors flex offensive muscles but experience pitching power outage
YUMA, Ariz. - Arizona Western softball (27-16, 11-11) split Friday doubleheader with ACCAC leader College of Southern Nevada despite hitting five homeruns in opening series homestand.
GAME ONE
Larissa Rueda hit two home runs and drove in four as Arizona Western defeated College of Southern Nevada 11-3in the opening game of a four-game series on Friday at Charlie Dine Field.
A home run to left field in the home half of the first inning by Rueda put Arizona Western on the board in the bottom of the first.
College of Southern Nevada took the lead in the top of the second. Mattingly Mauzey homered to center field, scoring three runs, to give College of Southern Nevada the upper hand, 3-2.
Arizona Western regained the lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to two fielding errors. The Lady Matadors extended their lead in the third after Gabby Weisser doubled to center field, and Corinna Talbot singled down the left field line, each scoring two runs.
Larissa Rueda added her second two-run homerun of the game in the bottom of the fourth to cement the Lady Matador win.
Jessica Smith started the game for Arizona Western in the circle. The hurler surrendered three hits and three runs over six innings, striking out nine and walking three in Arizona Western's 11-3 six inning victory.
GAME TWO
Analy Trejo hit two home runs and drove in two, but Arizona Western fell to College of Southern Nevada 16-6 in game two of the Friday doubleheader at Charlie Dine Field. Trejo homered in the third and fifth innings, extending her team lead to 11 homeruns on the season.
The Coyotes scored at least one run in all seven innings.
College of Southern Nevada extended their early 1-0 lead with four runs in the top of the second thanks to RBI singles by Mattingly Mauzey, Jimena Barraza Caro, and Reggi Frei.
The Lady Matadors cut the deficit to 7-4 in the bottom of the third inning when Rauni Gallegos hit a solo home run to center field, Trejo hit a solo home run to left field, and Alana McDonnell doubled, bringing home another run.
Analy Trejo hit her second solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Matadors could not stop the Coyotes from scoring, falling 16-6.

Arizona Western and the College of Southern Nevada will conclude their four game series on Saturday at Charlie Dine Field. First pitch for the Saturday doubleheader is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. MST.
