Lady Matadors drop both ends of high-scoring doubleheader at Southern Nevada
HENDERSON. Nev. - Arizona Western softball (19-10, 3-5) dropped both games of a back-and-forth doubleheader against College of Southern Nevada, falling 12-8 and 7-5 on Saturday. Defensive lapses and late rallies by the Coyotes overshadowed strong performances at the plate.
GAME ONE
Analy Trejo starred in the opener, collecting three hits, including a home run and double, and driving in three runs to power the Matadors' offense in game one.
Arizona Western struck first in the opening inning, with Larissa Rueda driving in a run on a sacrifice fly and Riley Purdy adding an RBI single for a quick 2-0 lead. Southern Nevada responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of Matador errors. After the Coyotes added two more runs in the third, the Matadors surged back in the fourth as Trejo launched a three-run homer to tie the game at 6-6. The Coyotes regained control in the bottom half, and despite a solo home run from Alana McDonnell in the sixth, Southern Nevada capitalized on more Arizona Western miscues to plate four runs in the bottom of the sixth and put the game away.
Riley Purdy also posted a multi-hit game and drove in three runs to keep Arizona Western in contention. McDonnell finished 2-for-3 with a double and a homer, while the Matadors tallied 12 hits overall but were ultimately undone by four errors that led to several unearned Coyotes runs.
GAME TWO
In game two, Corinna Talbot led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 day and a double, while Larissa Rueda homered and drove in two runs to keep the pressure on Southern Nevada. The Matadors fell behind early but pulled even in the fourth on Rueda's solo blast. After the Coyotes reclaimed the lead with a pinch-hit two-run homer, Arizona Western rallied in the fifth, scoring twice on a Rueda single and an error. Léa Fréchette put the Matadors ahead in the sixth with an RBI single, but Southern Nevada answered with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Chloe Tepraseuth's double and key RBI hits, sealing the sweep.
Léa Fréchette chipped in two hits and an RBI in game two, while Purdy delivered another multi-hit performance. Despite collecting 11 hits, Arizona Western could not hold its late advantage.
