Lady Matadors rebound to sweep doubleheader, split four-game series with Eastern Arizona

THATCHER, Ariz. - After dropping the first two road games of the season to Eastern Arizona on Friday, the Arizona Western softball team (16-4, 2-2) righted the ship with a doubleheader sweep of the Gila Monsters on Saturday afternoon. 

GAME 1

The Lady Matadors took the first game of the day 5-2 and opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Aaliyah Soderlund grounded out, scoring the games first run.

Jessica Smith started in the circle for Arizona Western and surrendered six hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one.

Alissa Pinon, Riley Purdy, Soderlund, and Avery Rodriguez each drove in a run for Arizona Western. Larissa Rueda led the Lady Matadors with two hits. The Lady Matadors ran wild on the base paths, piling up four stolen bases for the game and the defense didn't commit a single error.

GAME 2

The second game was all Arizona Western as the Lady Matadors breezed by the Gila Monsters 8-0. Arizona Western got on the board in the top of the third inning after Larissa Rueda laid down a sacrifice bunt, bringing home Analy Trejo from third. 

Brooklyn Cann started game two for the Lady Matadors in the circle and allowed seven hits and zero runs over six innings, striking out one and walking one. 

Rauni Gallegos, Trejo, and Myah Alexander each collected two hits for Arizona Western with Trejo and Alexander each collecting two RBIs. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up four walks for the game. Gallegos stole two bases and the Lady Matadors stole five bases as a team in the game.

Arizona Western will continue their 13-game road trip when they travel to Texas to face Midland College for a doubleheader on Thursday, March 5th.
