Softball finishes regular season with doubleheader sweep of Yavapai

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (30-21, 16-16) wrapped up the regular season by sweeping Yavapai (21-21, 16-16) on Saturday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, beating the Roughriders 9-3 and 2-0.

Destiny Martinez went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in, while Jayden Throgmorton finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in a run while tossing three shutout innings in the circle.

Yavapai took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Matadors' offense erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second inning, scoring runs on three RBI singles, a double, and an RBI groundout.

After the Roughriders grabbed a run back in the fifth inning, Nadya Moreno singled in a run and Alissa Pinon knocked in another with a sacrifice fly before Throgmorton capped off the scoring in the sixth inning with a double to score Krisilyn Corral.

Corral and Jayleen Espinoza each had two hits as Lili Vigil German tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just three hits in the Matadors' 2-0 win in game two.

The Matadors took the lead in the fourth inning on a Yavapai error and added an insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI bunt single from Analy Trejo.

With the sweep of the Roughriders, the Matadors earned the No. 3 seed in the Region I DI Softball tournament, getting underway on Friday, May 9, in Thatcher, Ariz., on the campus of Eastern Arizona College.
