Softball opens final homestand with doubleheader split with Yavapai

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (28-21, 14-16) opened the final regular season series of the year with a doubleheader split with Yavapai (21-19, 14-16) on Friday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, losing game one 11-3 before bouncing back to win game two 2-1.
Daysy Juarez went 1-for-3 and drove in two of the Matadors' three runs in the 11-3 loss in game one of the doubleheader.
After Yavapai opened the scoring in the first inning, the Matadors responded, grabbing a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run single from Juarez.
The Roughriders tied the game in the top of the fourth inning and put six runs on the board in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead.
The Matadors inched closer with a run in the fifth inning on a Krisilyn Corral RBI groundout before Yavapai put the game away with three runs in the sixth inning.
Rauni Gallegos went 1-for-3 and had the lone Matadors' RBI in a 2-1 win over the Roughriders in game two as starting pitcher Lili Vigi German struck out two batters and allowed one unearned run in a complete game win.
After a scoreless first four innings, Yavapai opened the scoring in the fifth inning, plating a run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Matadors tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jayleen Espinoza scored on a passed ball before Gallegos doubled in Nadya Moreno to give the Matadors the lead.
The Matadors and Roughriders wrap up the regular season on Saturday, May 3, in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
