Softball concludes trip to Coolidge with doubleheader split with Central Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (26-19, 12-14) split a doubleheader with the Central Arizona Vaqueras (12-34, 6-24) on Saturday afternoon in Coolidge, Ariz., winning game one 4-2 before falling 7-4 in game two.

Rauni Gallegos went 2-for-3 with a homer, and Krisilyn Corral finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the 4-2 win in game one.  

After Central Arizona opened the scoring, the Matadors captured the lead in the top of the third when Natalie Pinon singled, scoring two runs, and Kris Corral doubled, scoring one run to give the Matadors a 3-1 advantage.

Arizona Western scored one run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to center field by Gallegos to add to the lead.

Corral earned the win for Arizona Western, surrendering three hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings, striking out one and walking three.

Daysy Juarez went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jayden Throgmorton went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the Matadors' 7-4 loss in game two.

Arizona Western grabbed the lead in the second inning, scoring a run on a fielder's choice prior to the Vaqueras plating three runs in the bottom half. The Matadors got a run back in the third on a Juarez single and took the lead an inning later, scoring a run on an error and another on a sacrifice bunt to put the Matadors in front 4-3.

Central Arizona scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and two more times in the fifth to win the game 7-4.

The Matadors return home to finish the regular season by hosting Yavapai in a doubleheader on Friday, May 2, beginning at Noon at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
