Softball splits pair of games to open season at CSN Coyote Kickoff Classic
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (1-1) split a pair of games to open the 2025 season on Friday evening, beating North Idaho (1-1) 12-3 before falling to Snow (1-1) 8-5 in Henderson, Nev., at the Coyote Kickoff Classic.
Larissa Rueda homered twice and went 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Krisilyn Corral finished the opener with three hits, going 3-for-4, and also driving in three runs.
The Matadors hit four home runs in the win as Stephany Montoya and Léa Fréchette also homered in the win.
Arizona Western took an early lead in the first game of the day, taking a 2-0 advantage in the first inning on a pair of solo home runs before adding two more in the second inning to push the lead to 4-0.
North Idaho scored all three of its runs in the third inning to trim the Matadors' advantage to 4-3. Arizona Western answered with a pair of four-run innings, scoring four in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning to pull away.
Lili Vigil-German earned the win in the circle, allowing three runs on six hits in four innings while Autumn Arriola tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Arriola smashed a pair of home runs in game two, going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, in the Matadors' 8-5 loss to Snow College in the final game of the day.
The Matadors got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on Arriola's first home run of the game.
Snow answered, grabbing a 3-2 lead with a three-run bottom of the first inning before Arriola tied the game at 3-3 in the second with an RBI single. The Badgers scored the next five runs to take an 8-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Matadors tried to rally as Arriola hammered her second homer of the game and Nadya Moreno hit her first home run of the season to bring the Matadors to within three runs in the seventh inning. Fréchette had two hits in the loss while Corral struck out six batters in two innings of relief.
Arizona Western wraps up play in Henderson, Nev., on Saturday, January 25, taking on Salt Lake at 2:00 pm Arizona time and Pima at 4:30 pm Arizona time at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park.
