Five Lady Matadors named All-ACCAC, two earn All-Region honors
YUMA, Ariz. – Five Arizona Western Softball Players earned All-ACCAC honors with Jessie Garcia and Tinley Schmidall both named First-Team All-ACCAC and All-Region while Emily Gamboa and GiGi Garcia were Second-Team All-ACCAC honoree and Desiree Moran was voted Third Team All-ACCAC.
Jessie Garcia pitched in 26 games, making 25 starts, during the regular season, posting an 11-12 record with a 3.04 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 124.1 innings pitched. The freshman from Rio Rancho, N.M. struck out a season-high 11 batters in an 8-0 win at GateWay on April 6 and finished the season by earning her first save of the season on May 6 in a 5-2 win over Mesa, tossing three scoreless innings without surrendering a hit.
Schmidgall spent most of the season as the Lady Matadors Designated Player, batting .467 in 56 games, smashing 14 home runs while doubling 19 times. Schmidgall put together three two-home run games, doing so on March 23 at Mesa and April 4 at Yavapai before doing so for a third time on May 6 at home against Mesa. The former Gila Ridge product pieced together a 20-game hitting streak from February 18 to April 8.
Gamboa appearances in 26 games and made 15 starts in the circle during her freshman season, posting a 12-8 record with a 3.39 ERA, striking out 98 batters in 122.0 innings pitched, earning her Second Team All-ACCAC honors. The freshman from Calipatria, Calif., struck out a season-high nine batters at Scottsdale on March 14 and threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits, in a win over Snow on February 3.
GiGi Garcia finished the regular season as the team leader in home runs with 18 while batting .411 with 50 runs batted in, earning her a spot on Second Team All-ACCAC. The freshman infielder from Marana, Ariz., put together three games with five RBIs, driving in five runs against Snow in a 12-5 win on February 3 before doing so again against Glendale on April 18 and a few days later in a win at South Mountain.
Moran earned a Third Team All-ACCAC honor after batting .398 in 58 games as a sophomore this spring, homering four times and driving in 35 runs while leading the team in doubles with 28. Moran hit .511 in the month of March, recording nine of her 28 doubles in the 14 games that month. The Jurupa Valley High School alum recorded 21 multi-hit games and went 5-for-5 with three doubles in a 7-2 win over Scottsdale on March 14.
The Lady Matadors open postseason play on Friday, May 12, taking on the No. 1 seed Eastern Arizona in Thatcher, Ariz., at 11:00 am on the campus of Eastern Arizona.
