Softball overpowers Gauchos in sweep

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Softball (24-26, 23-15) got back on the winning side of things on Tuesday afternoon, taking a pair of games from Glendale (10-36, 8-30), taking game one 13-3 before finishing off the doubleheader sweep with a 16-3 win.

GiGi Garcia homered twice and drove in five runs while going 4-for-4 to help the Lady Matadors take the opener of the doubleheader 13-3.

Arizona Western trailed 3-0 until the fourth inning when they scored four runs to take the lead before adding six more in the fifth and topping it off with three in the sixth inning.

After allowing three runs, one earned, in the first inning, Jessie Garcia shut out the Gauchos for the final five innings, finishing the game with three strikeouts to earn the win.

Abigail Ibarra also homered while going 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and drawing a pair of walks in the win. Jasmine Molina doubled and drove in two runs, going 2-for-4.

Ibarra homered again in game two, going 1-for-3 with four runs batted in to lead the Lady Matadors to a sweep in a 16-3 win in game two.

Arizona Western scored 13 of their 16 runs in the first inning while Summer Simpson kept the Gauchos to just one run over three innings in relief.

Jasmine Molina and Annette Juarez each homered for the first time in their collegiate career in the win while Valerie Joaquin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored three runs.

The Lady Matadors are back on the road on Saturday, heading to South Mountain in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
