Softball sweeps Pumas to push winning streak to 10 games

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Softball (22-24, 21-13) extended its winning streak to 10 games on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Paradise Valley (9-25, 9-25) in a doubleheader at Charlie Dine Softball Field, taking the opener 8-0 in five innings before beating the Pumas 8-2 in six innings in the second game.  

Lady Matadors' starting pitcher Jessie Garcia allowed just two hits and threw a complete game shutout in game one, striking out six batters in the win.

Arizona Western sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning and scored four runs to open up a 4-0 lead before doubling the advantage with a four-run third inning.

Valerie Joaquin went 3-for-3 with a two-run single in the third inning while Garcia also contributed at the plate in addition to in the circle, finishing the game 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs batted in.

After allowing two runs in the first inning of game two, Emily Gamboa settled down and held the Pumas off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, allowing just two runs in six innings, striking out six batters in the win.

Arizona Western tied the game in the second inning with two runs and took the lead in the fourth, sending eight batters to the plate, highlighted by a Gamboa two-run double and a Jessie Garcia solo home run.  

The Lady Matadors added one more in the fifth and tacked on the final two runs I the sixth inning on a Jasmine Molina two-run single to end the game. Molina finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI while Kimberly Valenzuela went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

The Lady Matadors are at home on Saturday, hosting Pima in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
