Schmidgall collects five hits as Lady Matadors swept in doubleheader by Bears

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Softball (12-24, 11-13) dropped a pair of extra-inning games, getting swept by Phoenix (30-6, 21-5) on Tuesday afternoon, losing 3-2 in eight innings in game one and dropping game two 8-5 in eight innings in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Lady Matadors let a late lead slip away in game one despite a 2-for-4 effort from Desiree Moran who homered and drove in both runs in a 3-2 loss.

After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, the Lady Matadors score both of their runs in the fourth inning to grab a 2-1 lead. Phoenix scored a run in the seventh and in the eighth to come from behind and take the opener.

Tinley Schmidgall went 3-for-4 while GiGi Garcia had a pair of hits in the loss. Jessie Garcia allowed just two earned runs over eight innings, striking out four.

Schmidgall homered and drove in three runs in an 8-5 loss in game two as Phoenix scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to sweep the doubleheader.

The Lady Matadors took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning but Phoenix scored five of the final six runs of the game to beat the Lady Matadors 8-5.

Mollie Forbes had two hits in the loss finishing the game 2-for-4 while Abigail Ibarra doubled. Emily Gamboa struck out four batters in eight innings of work.

The Lady Matadors return home on Saturday, April 1, hosting GateWay in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
