YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Softball (12-22, 11-11) used a big seven-run inning in game two to split a doubleheader with Chandler-Gilbert (9-22, 9-17), winning game two 13-3 after losing the opener 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Lady Matadors' starting pitcher Jessie Garcia did not allow an earned run while striking out seven batters over six innings in the game one 5-3 loss.

Both starting pitchers traded scoreless frames until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Coyotes pushed across five runs, all unearned, giving Chandler-Gilbert a 5-0 lead.

The Lady Matadors were able to cut the lead to 5-3 with three runs in the seventh inning. Mackenzie Barney went 1-for-2 with a triple and drove in a run in the loss.

Tinley Schmidgall picked up two hits and drove in a run while Jessie Garcia doubled in the loss.

Arizona Western used a seven-run fourth inning to beat the Coyotes 13-3 in game two to earn a doubleheader split.

Schmidgall fueled the offense, smashing a home run while going 3-for-4 and driving in five runs while Desiree Moran collected four hits, going 4-for-5 with a double and a run batted in.

Valerie Joaquin drove in two runs, finishing the game 3-for-5 with a double and Emily Gamboa doubled, going 2-for-4 with a run batted in.

Schmidgall allowed one run on five hits in four innings to earn the win while Gamboa allowed just one earned run in three innings of relief.

The Lady Matadors head to Phoenix on Tuesday, March 28 to battle the Bears in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
