Softball swept by Gila Monsters in doubleheader

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (4-14, 3-3) was swept in a doubleheader by Eastern Arizona (10-10, 7-3), losing 14-5 in game one and 13-1 in game two on Tuesday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field.

Abigail Ibarra and Jessie Garcia each doubled twice and GiGi Garcia homered in the Lady Matadors' 14-5 game-one loss to the Gila Monsters.

Eastern Arizona sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning of game one, scoring six runs to grab the early lead. After the Gila Monsters added two more runs in the second inning, the Lady Matadors batted eight times in the third inning, scoring four runs thanks to a Mollie Forbes two-run single and a GiGi Garcia two-run home run, cutting the Gila Monsters' lead in half at 8-4.

Eastern Arizona scored six more runs in the seventh inning before the Lady Matadors added their final run of the game in the seventh on an error.

The Lady Matadors were held to just two hits in game two of the doubleheader in a 13-1 loss to the Gila Monsters.

Eastern Arizona scored two runs in the first and third innings before scoring six runs in the fourth and adding three more in the fifth to take a 13-0 lead.

Mollie Forbes accounted for the only run for the Lady Matadors, a solo home run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 13-1. Tinley Schmidgall picked up the other hit for the Lady Matadors with a fourth-inning double.

Arizona Western heads out on the road on Saturday, heading to Phoenix for an ACCAC doubleheader with Paradise Valley beginning at Noon.
