Lady Matadors lose 6-5 to Northeastern
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors softball team (0-3) let a late lead slip away, dropping the final game of the day to Northeastern (2-1) 6-5 on Friday evening.
Sherlyn Molina led the Lady Matadors with three hits, going 3-for-3 with an RBI while GiGi Garcia homered and drove in two runs.
Lady Matadors' starting pitcher Elisa Garcia allowed just two earned runs over seven innings of work while striking out four batters.
Molina gave the Lady Matadors the lead in the second inning, driving in Jessie Garcia with a single, putting the Lady Matadors in front 1-0. Mollie Forbes and Elisa Garcia hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to extend the Lady Matadors' lead to 2-0.
After Northeastern tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, Garcia gave the Lady Matadors the lead back at 4-2 with a two-run home run.
Northeastern rallied, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead. The Lady Matadors got one run back in the seventh but could not scratch across the tying run.
The Lady Matadors take on Utah State Eastern in the first game of the second day of the Coyote Kickoff Classic at 9:00 am.
