Lady Matadors fall to Bruins, 14-4
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors softball team (0-2) dropped its second consecutive game to start the season on Friday evening, falling to Salt Lake (2-1) 14-4.
Mollie Forbes went 1-for-2 with a home run and two runs batted in while both Valarie Joaquin and Desiree Moran each went 1-for-2 with a run scored in the loss.
The Lady Matadors opened the scoring, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tinley Schmidgall singled in Joaquin.
Salt Lake scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning before the Lady Matadors tied the game in the top of the second inning. Forbes smashed her first career home run, a two-run homer, pulling the Lady Matadors to within a run at 4-3. GiGi Garcia tied the game at 4-4 with a single scoring Jocelynn Hernandez.
The Bears wasted little time, putting together their second consecutive four-run inning to jump back in front 8-4. Salt Lake scored five more runs in the third inning and added one more in the fourth to extend the advantage to 14-4.
The Lady Matadors return to action later tonight taking on Northeastern in Henderson, Nev. at Stephanie Lynn Craig Field.
