Marsai Mason named NJCAA 2nd Team All-American
Arizona Western men's basketball player Marsai Mason is named to theNJCAA DI All-American 2nd Team. The "Dominator" as he is called by his coaches, nearly averaged a double-double on the season leading the Matadors in points per game (16.7) and rebounds per game (9.9).
"We've been really blessed," Arizona Western men's basketball coach Kyle Isaacs said. "I think it's five years in a row now we've had someone nominated and receive an All-American honor. Marsai did a great job coming here from Humboldt State. He averaged around 11 points and six rebounds per game there, with us he turned it up a notch, adding five more points to his total and another four rebounds to his averages. Just a great job, just really pleased and can't wait to see what he does at the next level."
In 29 games played, Mason compiled 16 double-doubles and recorded career highs in points (38) points and rebounds (19) in a 108-98 win on the road against Central Arizona on January 28th.
"Marsai came in and fit in right away," Isaacs said. "He just did a great job of dominating at the rim, dominating with rebounding and he's another ACCAC player of the year here. Four out of five years for us."
Coach Isaacs explains where the nickname "The Dominator" came from.
"We worked with him one on one a lot in practice and he would just dominate everyone on the team," Isaacs said with a smile. "It started and stuck around mid-November. I took him a little bit to get in the condition we wanted him to be in, once he got into shape it was domination."
