Men's Basketball extends winning streak to five with 73-68 win at Southern Nevada

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (13-4, 4-2) won its fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon in North Las Vegas, Nev., beating College of Southern Nevada (9-3, 4-1) 73-68 at CSN Coyote Event Center.

Both Edwin Suarez and Kaleb Myers posted double-doubles in the Matadors' win, scoring 19 points. Suarez led the team in rebounds with 15, and Myers finished with 11.

Arizona Western opened up an early lead, jumping out to a 9-5 advantage on a made Cam Atkinson three-pointer. The Coyotes scored 16 of the next 19 points, going on a 16-3 run to jump in front of the Matadors 21-12 before Atkinson halted the Southern Nevada run with his second made three-pointer of the half. The Matadors closed to within a pair of points at 21-19 on an Edwin Suarez putback before Southern Nevada used another run to push the lead to 24-19. The Matadors closed the first half on a 10-5 run, going into the locker room tied at 29-29.

The Matadors took the lead early in the second half and went up three points at 39-36 on a Kaleb Myers dunk. It was Myers who would again put the Matadors up by three with a dunk in transition, giving the Matadors a 47-44 lead. The Matadors scored 15 of the next 20 points to take a 6-49 lead on a Darnell Childs layup, forcing a Southern Nevada timeout. Southern Nevada chipped away at the Matadors' lead, cutting the Arizona Western advantage to 69-65 with just over two minutes to play. Southern Nevada was able to trim the Matadors' lead to one point and 69-68 but Arizona Western scored the final four points of the game to earn the win.

Matt Anglo chipped in with 14 points and Atkinson was the Matadors' fourth-leading scorer, scoring 10 points off the bench and leading the team in three-point makes with three.

The Matadors return home to host No. 16 ranked Eastern Arizona on Wednesday, January 15, at the House Gymnasium at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
