Men's Basketball comes up short in clash with Apaches, falling 58-55 to Cochise

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (8-4, 2-2) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night, suffering a 58-55 loss to Cochise (8-3, 2-1) at the House Gymnasium.

Matt Anglo led the Matadors with 20 points while Aaron Barton scored 11, finishing the game as two of the Matadors' three double-figure scorers.

The Matadors trailed 10-6 in the first half but scored 12 of the next 14 points to take an 18-12 lead on a Matt Anglo jumper. Cochise pieced together a 13-0 run to take the lead back at 25-18. Cam Atkinson nailed a three-pointer with four seconds on the clock to tie the game at 25-25 at the break.

Cochise led for the majority of the second half before Anglo gave the Matadors the brief lead at 45-43 with a jumper. Boubacar Diatta snatched the lead back for the Matadors with two minutes to play, hitting a three-pointer to put Arizona Western up 53-52. The Matadors had the lost shot of the game but an Anglo three-point attempt fell short.

Atkinson was the Matadors' third-leading scorer, scoring 10 points off the bench.

The Matadors are back in action on Tuesday, December 17, hosting No. 16 ranked Southern Idaho at 5:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
