Offensive struggles plague Matadors in Men's Basketball's 58-47 loss to Eastern Arizona

The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (5-3, 0-1) was held to a season-low in points on Wednesday night, opening conference play with a 58-47 loss to Eastern Arizona (7-1, 1-0) at Guitteau Gymnasium in Thatcher, Ariz., snapped a three-game winning streak. 

Matt Anglo led the Matadors in scoring, finishing the game with 11 points, and was the only Matador to score in double-figures, leading the team in made three-pointers with two. Freshman Boubacar Diatta scored nine points and had eight rebounds in the loss. 

The Matadors trailed by as many as six points in the first half but rallied to take a 13-12 lead on an Edwin Suarez layup and built the lead to 15-12 thanks to a bucket by Anglo before the Gila Monsters closed the first half on a 10-6 run to take a 22-21 lead into the locker room. 

Eastern Arizona opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 28-22 lead battling back to tie the score at 29-29 on an Anglo basket and foul to cap off a 7-1 run. The Gila Monsters ran away from the Matadors, outscoring Arizona Western 36-26 in the second half. 

Edwin Suarez led the Matadors in rebounds with nine while Aaron Barton added eight points off the bench. 

The Matadors return home on Saturday, November 23, when they host Community Christian in an ACCAC matchup at 4:00 p.m. at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
