Offensive struggles and defensive miscues sink Matadors at CSN
HENDERSON, Nev. -- The No. 17 Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team dropped both games of a pivotal conference doubleheader to No. 11 College of Southern Nevada at Morse Stadium on Friday, falling 4-1 in the opener and 10-4 in the second game.
GAME ONE
Thijs Helms induced 10 groundouts and struck out three across 90 pitches, but defensive missteps proved decisive. Arizona Western left four runners on base and failed to mount a late rally. Arizona Western battled through three scoreless innings before College of Southern Nevada broke through in the fourth. The Coyotes pushed across two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Matadors managed only one run on one hit, a double from Luis Acosta, as CSN starter James Bradford held Arizona Western in check throughout the contest. Offensive struggles defined the opener for Arizona Western, which finished with just a single hit and struck out eight times. Four defensive errors led to extra opportunities for CSN, and the lack of run support left Thijs Helms on the losing end despite allowing only three earned runs over six innings.
GAME TWO
Arizona Western's offense showed more life in the second game but again could not overcome defensive struggles. CSN built a 5-0 lead through three innings before the Matadors responded in the fourth with a solo home run from Parker Husu and a two-run shot by Elias Huber, cutting the deficit to 5-3. Huber finished with two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.
Strikeouts and errors continued to plague the Matadors, who struck out 14 times and committed five errors, leading to multiple unearned runs. Gregorys Mateo allowed two earned runs over four innings and took the loss. Dan Kawanishi and Acosta each drove in two runs, but Arizona Western left eight runners on base and could not keep pace with the Coyotes' offense.
