Matadors wallop Warriors, turn attention back to ACCAC schedule

YUMA, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona Western College baseball team (33-9) returned to the win column in emphatic fashion, shutting out Nelson U JV 11-0 in a run-rule shortened five-inning contest Wednesday afternoon at Walt Kammann Field.

Elias Huber set the tone from the outset, striking out the side in a scoreless first inning, and the Matadors offense wasted no time getting started with a run in the bottom half. Arizona Western built a 4-0 lead through two innings, scoring once in the first and adding three more in the second.

Arizona Western broke the game open with a massive seven-run fourth inning, highlighted by a six-extra-base-hit attack that included four doubles, a triple and a home run. Luis Acosta led the charge at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Brayden Hibler smashed the game's only home run as part of a 1-for-2, two-RBI performance, while Jamie Beerman added an RBI triple.

Pitching remained the story as Jared Burgueno earned his first win of the season, tossing three scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no hits allowed. The Matadors' staff combined for a one-hitter, totaling seven strikeouts and three walks over five shutout frames without an error or a single runner left on base. The 11-0 shutout marked Arizona Western's 11th shutout performance of the 2026 season, and the seventh time this year the Matadors have scored exactly 11 runs in a game—remaining unbeaten when reaching that total.
