Matadors start long homestand by clipping Falcons
Arizona Western baseball continues dominance over non-conference rivals
YUMA, Ariz. -- The No. 19 Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (32-9) delivered a dominant 8-0 shutout victory over Miramar on Tuesday afternoon at Walt Kammann field, extending their home record to 17-4. The Matadors swept the season series with Miramar and have now outscored them 19-4 across two meetings in 2026.
Joris Meinsma set the tone early, working four scoreless innings on the mound. He scattered three hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk, improving to 5-0 on the year. Meinsma's effort was supported by a disciplined lineup that forced the action throughout, highlighted by six stolen bases.
Arizona Western scratched across its first run in the second, then broke the game open in the late innings. A four-run sixth inning fueled the surge, with Gerardo Castro and Elian Olmos each delivering RBI doubles. Castro finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, reaching base four times. Alessandro Laise added two hits, one RBI and scored twice, also swiping a base as Arizona Western ran wild on the base paths.
The Matadors poured on three more runs in the seventh, finishing with eight runs on eight hits and six walks. Anthony Lucero handled the final two frames out of the bullpen, striking out three over two hitless innings to secure the shutout. Arizona Western pitching combined for nine strikeouts and allowed only four hits in the win.
