Road warriors! Matadors sweep doubleheader at Central Arizona behind plate discipline and timely hitting
Ten Shindo and Elias Huber spark the offense as Arizona Western improves to 28-6
COOLIDGE, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona Western Baseball team (28-6, 10-5 ACCAC) swept a conference doubleheader over Central Arizona College on Saturday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep on the road, posting convincing wins of 13-3 and 10-5 to extend their winning streak and keep pace in the ACCAC standings.
GAME ONE
The Matadors opened the day with an offensive outburst, scoring 13 runs in the first three innings of game one and running away with a 13-3 victory in a five-inning contest. Arizona Western capitalized on eight walks and five hit batters from Central Arizona's pitching staff, turning just five hits into a season-best 13 runs. Shortstop Ten Shindo crossed the plate three times and drew two walks, while second baseman Elias Huber led all players with four RBI despite not recording a hit. Brayden Hibler added two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, highlighting Arizona Western's aggressive, disciplined approach at the plate. On the mound, freshman left-hander Diego Alcala earned the win by tossing 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Filippo Baldassarri closed out the run-rule win by retiring the only batter he faced. The Matadors' 13-run performance marked their highest scoring output in a conference game this season and pushed their win streak to three.
In game two, Arizona Western again set the tone early, taking a 4-1 lead through two innings. Central Arizona answered with a four-run fourth to tie the game, but the Matadors responded quickly, using two runs in the sixth and a decisive four-run rally in the ninth to secure a 10-5 win and the doubleheader sweep. Ten Shindo starred once again, going 1-for-3 with a double, three RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases to pace the offense. Gerardo Castro led the team with three hits and drove in two runs, while Mattia Bernardis picked up his fourth win of the season after delivering five innings of relief with four strikeouts and no walks. Arizona Western drew 13 walks in the second game alone, finishing the doubleheader with 21 total walks as a team.
Arizona Western committed zero errors over both games, played clean defense on the road and improved to 6-3 in away contests this season. The Matadors are now 20-0 when scoring at least 10 runs, continuing to establish themselves as one of the ACCAC's most dangerous offensive teams. The sweep sets up a crucial home series against Cochise College, a team responsible for two of the Matadors' few losses this spring.
