Matadors fall short, swept by CSN in Friday Top 20 Showdown
YUMA, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona Western College baseball team (23-6, 6-5 ACCAC) dropped both games of Friday's ACCAC doubleheader against No. 18 College of Southern Nevada, falling 5-0 in the opener before coming up short in a late rally for a 6-4 defeat in game two at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
GAME ONE
The opener saw a tight battle through the first three innings, with the Matadors matching Southern Nevada on the mound and in the field before the visitors broke through in the top of the fourth. CSN used a single to plate the game's first run, then added two more in the fifth and another pair in the sixth to take control. Arizona Western managed four hits in the contest, with Victor Lopez providing half of those and catching the majority of the game.
Despite putting runners on base in several innings, the Matadors were unable to convert, stranding four and finishing without an extra-base hit or RBI. Southern Nevada's James Bradford kept Arizona Western off balance, working six shutout innings with four strikeouts. On the defensive side, Arizona Western allowed 10 hits but limited damage in key moments until CSN broke it open late.
GAME TWO
Game two featured a much livelier offensive effort for Arizona Western, with Luis Angulo and Luis Acosta leading the charge. Trailing 2-0 after two early runs by CSN, the Matadors responded in the bottom of the second as Acosta doubled in Angulo. The fourth inning saw Arizona Western surge ahead, starting with an Acosta triple to score Angulo, followed by a groundout RBI from Parker Husu and an RBI double by Ten Shindo to make it 4-2.
Momentum shifted in the sixth inning when Southern Nevada's Brandon Swanson connected for a go-ahead three-run home run, turning a 4-2 Arizona Western lead into a 5-4 deficit. The Matadors had opportunities late, loading the bases multiple times and collecting seven hits along with seven walks, but were ultimately unable to capitalize, leaving 12 runners on base. Angulo reached safely four times, scored twice and stole two bases, while Acosta finished 2-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBI.
