Matador baseball dominant in home doubleheader sweep, extend win streak to 14
YUMA, Ariz. -- The Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (14-1) delivered a commanding sweep of Scottsdale Post Grad on Monday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, capturing both ends of a non-conference doubleheader by scores of 14-0 and 11-0. Both games ended after five innings due to the run rule, underscoring the Matadors' dominance as they extended their winning streak and showcased their depth on both sides of the ball. After dropping thgier first game of the year to South Mountain, Arizona Western has now rattled off 14 wins in a row under first year head coach Jon Wente.
GAME ONE
Luis Angulo spearheaded the offense in game one, going 3-for-4 with a double and a game-high five RBIs to set the tone early. The Matadors broke the game open in the third inning, erupting for 10 runs, then tacked on four more in the fourth to seize full control.
Elias Huber added a double, drove in three runs and scored three times, while Ten Shindo reached base in all four plate appearances and crossed the plate three times. Gerardo Castro also scored three times to help fuel the offensive onslaught.
On the mound, Mattia Bernardis was in full command, tossing a five-inning complete game shutout. He allowed just two hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk while improving his record to 3-0.
GAME TWO
In the second game, the Matadors wasted no time jumping ahead, plating five runs in the first inning and maintaining their aggressive approach. Ten Shindo turned in a perfect performance at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Elias Huber followed up with two hits, a home run and three RBIs.
Parker Husu was relentless on the basepaths, stealing five bases and scoring three runs to keep pressure on the Scottsdale defense. The pitching staff combined for a second consecutive shutout, with Filippo Baldassarri earning the win after two hitless innings and four strikeouts, supported by Joris Meinsma, Paul Garcia and Filip Kollmann to close out the combined two-hit effort.
"Our first third of the season is now behind us and hopefully we have some confidence heading into conference play," Matadors head coach Jon Wente said. "Heading into ACCAC play, everyone is even. We still need to figure out the best spots for some guys. What our best lineup is, our best bullpen situation and who starts for us in conference. I'm proud of the way we've played and the record we have but now it starts for real."
