Pitching, Power Lead Matadors Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep of OUAZ JV

YUMA, Ariz. -The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team extended thier win streak to 12 games with a doubleheader sweep against the Ottawa University JV on Saturday afternoon, winning both games by identical 10-0 scores in shortened contests at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

In the first game, the Matadors won in five innings behind a dominant performance from starting pitcher Diego Alcala, who threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits. The offense scored a run in the first before breaking the game open with an eight-run fourth inning. Gerardo Castro led the charge with five runs batted in, hitting two doubles. Parker Husu reached base three times and scored twice for the Matadors.

The second game was a display of power as the Matadors ended the game in six innings. Gregorys Mateo matched his teammate's effort on the mound, tossing a six-inning complete-game shutout while giving up only three hits and striking out four. The offense was fueled by the long ball, launching five home runs. Trace Garrison and Ten Shindo each hit two homers, with Garrison driving in four runs and Shindo plating three. Luis Angulo added the fifth home run of the game for Arizona Western.

"We're taking advantage of things that are given to us," Head Coach Jon Wente Said. "We're playing better on defense and throwing enough strikes to give us a chance. We're taking advantage of our chances and making it hurt a little bit."

The Matadors in game one were once again paced by Gerry Castro which was no surprise to Coach Jon Wente.

"You kind of expect him to come up with the clutch hit," Wente said. "If he doesn't do it in the first at bat you're a little shocked. He's a really good hitter and he competes hard at the plate and doesn't give a ton of swings away. I'm just proud of his approach."

Wente also touched on his pitching staff and players in the batter's box leading to his team's 12 game winning streak.

"I thought Diego Alcala beared down when he had to," Wente said. "They got som early hits. got some guys on, he punched some guys out when he needed to. Gregory Mateo throw a ton of strikes, when you throw the ball over the plate and not walk guys, you have a chance. Those guys did a great job and we played great defense. On offense, Parker Husu just sets the tone for us. He always has a great AB, always gets on, he has a chance to bunt, put a ball into the gap. Gerry, we rely on him so much. Trace and Ten in the second game with the homeruns. That was something cool to see."
