Baseball sweeps Community Christian with perfect game, near cycle and two run-rule shutouts

YUMA, Ariz. -- The Arizona Western College baseball team (9-1) delivered a dominant doubleheader sweep over Community Christian College on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, winning game one 18-0 and game two 15-0, both in five innings by run rule. The day was highlighted by a perfect game from Thijs Helms in the opener and a near cycle from Elias Huber in the second game.

The Matadors wasted no time in showcasing their firepower in the opener. Ten Shindo tripled home Parker Husu in the first inning, setting the tone for a relentless offense. Arizona Western scored two in the first, then erupted for eight runs in the second thanks to a string of hits and run-producing at-bats from Shindo, Elias Huber, and Luis Angulo.

Luis Angulo capped the second inning with a bases-clearing single, ultimately finishing 3-for-4 with a triple, five RBI and three runs scored. Ten Shindo was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and three runs. Every Matador in the lineup reached base, and the team took full advantage of seven walks and four Community Christian errors.

While the offense rolled, Thijs Helms was flawless on the mound. The sophomore right-hander tossed a five-inning perfect game, retiring all 15 batters he faced with four strikeouts and no walks or hits. Arizona Western's defense backed him with clean play, and Helms needed just 45 pitches to record the historic feat. The game ended in the fifth after the Matadors tacked on two more runs for an 18-0 run-rule victory.

GAME TWO

In game two, the Matadors picked up right where they left off. Parker Husu opened the bottom of the first with a run, sparking an explosive 12-run inning that featured extra-base hits from up and down the order. Elias Huber delivered the biggest blows, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, six RBI and three runs scored, falling just a triple short of the cycle.

On the mound, Mattia Bernardis kept the Saints hitless into the fourth, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn the win. The Matador bullpen completed the one-hit shutout, while the offense added three more runs, including a two-run homer from Huber, to finish off the 15-0 win in five innings.
