Baseball scores 19 runs in two games to sweep No. 10-ranked Cochise

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (30-16, 15-13 ) scored 19 runs over two games to sweep a doubleheader with No. 10 ranked Cochise College (39-10, 20-9) on Friday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, winning game one 10-4 before taking game two 9-2.

The Matadors used a pair of five-run innings to take the opener of the doubleheader with a 10-4 win over the Apaches.

Javier Diaz went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Victor Lopez singled twice and scored two runs in the win.

The Matadors batted 10 times in the second inning, opening the scoring on a Lopez single and adding to the lead on a two-run double from Diaz. An Andres Ontiveros sacrifice fly and a Bronson Neave single pushed the lead to 5-0.

After Cochise scored a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth, the Matadors again put five runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, batting 11 times.

Parker Husu went 5-for-5 with a two-run homer and a double while driving in five runs in a 9-2 win over Cochise in game two.

The Matadors got the scoring started in the second inning when Husu hammered a two-run homer to right to put the Matadors in front 2-0.

After the Apaches cut the lead to 2-1, Husu doubled in the Matadors' third run to push the lead back to two runs at 3-1 in the fourth inning. Ontiveros added the Matadors' fourth run with a line drive single to center to push the advantage to 4-1 in the fifth inning.

The Matadors batted nine times in the seventh inning and added three more runs to their lead, and tacked on two more in the eighth on the way to the win.

Elian Olmos went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and two walks, while Diego Evans allowed two runs over seven innings of work in the win.

The Matadors are back in action on Saturday, April 12, hosting Cochise in the series finale with a single nine-inning game beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
