Baseball salvages finale to earn doubleheader split with Cochise
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (13-5, 7-5) split a doubleheader with Cochise (14-6, 7-5) in Douglas, Ariz., at Bo Hall Field on Saturday afternoon, losing game one 3-1 before finishing the three-game series with a 13-2 win over the Apaches.
Gerardo Castro had a pair of hits and went 2-for-3 while Andres Ontiveros drove in the lone Matadors' run in a 3-1 loss in game one.
Sergio Lugo allowed three runs, just one earned, and struck out five batters in the opener of the doubleheader as the Matadors were held to just one run for the second straight game.
Parker Husu went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs batted in while Luca Hoerger also went 3-for-4 with a run batted in as the Matadors salvaged the finale of a three-game series with a 13-2 win in game two.
The Matadors grabbed the lead in the first inning before Cochise scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and another in the second inning.
Arizona Western put together back-to-back six-run innings in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away from the Apaches.
Lukas Pacal tossed a complete game, allowing one earned run on five hits and struck out four in a win.
The Matadors return home to host California Post Grad in a doubleheader beginning at Noon on Tuesday, February 25, at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
