YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (4-0) finished off a four-game series sweep of the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes (0-4) by taking both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Chandler, Ariz., winning game one 10-1 before taking game two 5-3.
Sergio Lugo tossed five shutout innings in his first collegiate start in the Matadors' 10-1 win in game one, allowing six hits and striking out three in the win. Bronson Neave went 3-for-4 with an RBI while hitting two doubles.
The Matadors took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a ground out and added to that lead in the fourth inning, scoring four runs highlighted by a Gerardo Castro two-run double.
Arizona Western plated two more runs in the fifth inning before adding a run in the sixth. The Matadors tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-0 lead before Chandler-Gilbert added their lone run of the game in the bottom half.
Castro finished the game 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in while Nathan Houston also collected a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Neave picked up from where he left off in game one, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, in the Matadors' 5-3 win in game two.
The Matadors fell behind in the third inning in game two and trailed 1-0 until the top of the seventh inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Andres Ontieveros singled and was knocked in by Bronson Neave who doubled to tie the game at 1-1. Luis Angulo gave the Matadors the lead with a base hit to left to put the Matadors up 2-1.
After Isaac Camacho got out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning, Javier Diaz drove in the third run of the game for the Matadors with a single to left, pushing the lead to 3-1. The Matadors added two more in the ninth which the Coyotes matched in the bottom half of the inning to cut the final margin back to two runs.
Starting pitcher Lukas Pacal allowed one run on five hits while striking out five batters in six innings in his first collegiate start to earn the win on the mound while Isaac Camacho and Aiden Schmidgall each tossed a scoreless frame.
The Matadors open the home portion of their 2025 schedule and begin conference play on Friday, January 30, hosting Yavapai at 2:00 pm in a single nine-inning game at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
