Matadors fall 6-4 to Pima in decisive game three of Region I finals

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Western Baseball (35-18) saw its season come to an end in a decisive game three of the Region I finals, losing 6-4 to Pima (41-16) on Saturday afternoon at Aztec Baseball Field.

Wesley Estrella and Tyler Leroy combined to drive in four of the Matadors' six runs, each driving in a pair in the Matadors' loss.

Pima opened the scoring by grabbing three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead before Matadors' starter Juan Gill Franco kept the Aztecs off the scoreboard for the next five innings, finishing the game with just three runs allowed on four hits while striking out seven batters.

The Matadors got on the board in the third inning thanks to a two-run double off the bat of Leroy to cut the Pima lead to 3-2. The Matadors tied the game in the fifth inning when Jared Davis came home to score on a fielder's choice from Estrella.

Pima regained the lead in the seventh inning with their second three-run inning of the game, taking a 6-3 advantage. The Matadors threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with no outs but were only able to grab one run on an Estrella fielder's choice.

Davis led the Matadors with four hits, going 4-for-5 while Robert Miranda went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Roland Marte struck out four batters in 1.2 innings of relief.
