Baseball places four on All-ACCAC teams; two named All-Region
YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Baseball earned four All-ACCAC honors and two All-Region honors with Wesley Estrella and Roland Marte named first-team All-ACCAC and All-Region selections while Jorge Carvajal and Robert Miranda named second-team All-ACCAC.
Estrella finished the regular season as the ACCAC's top hitter, leading the conference in batting average, hitting .395, 16 points higher than the second-best average in the ACCAC. The infielder finished the season with 35 runs batted in, leading the Matadors. The sophomore is second on the team in home runs with three and tied for the team lead in stolen bases with 16. Estrella was selected as the Designated Hitter on the first team.
Marte leads the ACCAC in wins with 11 and is tied for the conference lead in complete games with six. The right-hander owns an 11-3 record with four saves and a 3.32 ERA, striking out 69 batters in 95.0 innings of work. The sophomore struck out a season-high nine batters in seven innings in a start against Northeastern on February 4.
Like Marte, Carvajal also has thrown six complete games this season, tied with Marte for the lead in the ACCAC. Carvajal also leads the conference in game started, making 14 starts so far this season, and is 9-3 with a 2.68 ERA, striking out 86 batters in 77.1 innings pitched. Carvajal struck out a season-high 10 batters in his previous start, allowing just four runs in eight innings against Phoenix on April 27.
Miranda enters the postseason ninth in the ACCAC in batting average, hitting .355 through 47 games played so far in his freshman season. The infielder has recorded 10 doubles, and a homer, and has batted in 25 runs. Miranda put together a season-high five hits in a 16-6 win over Glendale on April 1, going 5-for-6 with two doubles and three runs batted in.
The Matadors open up the Region I playoffs on Thursday, May 4, heading to Coolidge Ariz., to take on the No. 1 seeded Central Arizona Vaqueros in game one of a best-of-three series in the Region I semifinals.
